The Road to the Ballot: A Grassroots Movement in Columbus’ District 7

84–that’s how many days stand between ColumbUS and the May 6th primary—a pivotal moment for Columbus, for District 7, and for this campaign.

This Friday, February 14th, marks another major milestone: petition certification day. Over the past few months, we’ve built something truly special—an independent, people-powered movement focused on bringing leadership that meets our community where they are and prepared to take them where we need to go. And now, after collecting over 250 signatures, we’re on the verge of securing our spot on the ballot.

A True Grassroots Campaign

From the beginning, this campaign has been about people, not political machines. While other candidates raised with the help of a fundraising professional, I’ve been doing this the grassroots way—personally reaching out to each donor via email, call and text, knocking on doors, and having real conversations with the people of District 7.

We’ve talked about the issues that matter most:
🏡 Expanding housing opportunities to ensure working families can live and thrive in Columbus.
🚔 Community-centered policing that prioritizes safety, trust, and accountability.
💼 Empowering local entrepreneurs and creating a Columbus where small businesses can succeed.
📈 Preparing our city for the future, as the 14th largest city in the U.S., with smart growth policies that serve everyone.

Every conversation, every signature collected, and every contribution made has helped build this campaign from the ground up—and we’re just getting started.

What Comes Next

If we get certified on Friday, our next challenge is clear: getting the word out to more voters across Columbus about our vision for District 7–for Columbus. We’ll need more volunteers, more conversations, and more grassroots support to make sure that come May 6th, the people—not political parties—decide who represents them.

The journey so far has been humbling, energizing, and deeply personal. Running as an Independent means doing this the hard way, but it also means doing it the right way—by putting community first.

Thank you for being part of this movement. Let’s make history together.

With gratitude,
Densil Porteous
Independent Candidate for Columbus City Council, District 7
