LGBTQ+ Rights & Inclusion

Equity and Inclusion: A Vision for LGBTQ+ Rights in Columbus

As an LGBTQ+ advocate, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of visibility, inclusion, and equity. Columbus has long been a leader in championing LGBTQ+ rights, but there is still much work to be done to ensure that every member of our community—regardless of their identity—feels safe, supported, and valued.

For me, advocacy isn’t just about protecting rights; it’s about creating spaces where people can thrive. It’s about addressing the intersectional challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals face, from workplace discrimination to socioeconomic barriers. It’s about building a city that celebrates diversity in all its forms and presents Columbus as a welcoming and inclusive city—a vital factor as we grow and attract new businesses and residents to our community.

Safe spaces are more than physical locations—they’re environments where people feel respected, affirmed, and empowered. To foster these spaces, we must:

  • Support Youth Programs: Invest in initiatives that provide LGBTQ+ youth with mentorship, resources, and support, ensuring they have the tools to succeed in school and beyond.
  • Strengthen Workplace Protections: Advocate for policies that combat discrimination and create inclusive workplaces where LGBTQ+ employees can bring their full selves to work.
  • Celebrate Through Community Events: Back events like Pride and other inclusive celebrations that foster connection, uplift voices, and promote acceptance.

Creating safe spaces is about more than inclusion; it’s about creating opportunities for growth, connection, and joy.

The challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals often intersect with issues of race, economic inequality, and systemic barriers. To truly advocate for equity, we must adopt policies that address these interconnected struggles.

That means:

  • Prioritizing Vulnerable Populations: Focus on policies that uplift LGBTQ+ people of color, transgender individuals, and others who face compounded marginalization.
  • Addressing Socioeconomic Disparities: Support initiatives that increase access to housing, healthcare, and education for LGBTQ+ individuals facing financial instability.
  • Centering Community Voices: Engage directly with LGBTQ+ residents to ensure their needs and experiences shape policy decisions.

Intersectionality is about recognizing that no one lives a single-issue life. Advocacy must reflect the complexity of our identities and experiences.

Imagine a Columbus where LGBTQ+ youth feel safe to dream big, where workplaces are models of inclusivity, and where policy decisions reflect the voices of the most vulnerable among us. Imagine a city where diversity is celebrated, not just during Pride but every day of the year.

This vision isn’t just possible—it’s necessary. By fostering LGBTQ+ rights and diversity, Columbus can continue to position itself as a leader in equity and inclusion—a city that attracts businesses, innovators, and residents because of its vibrant, welcoming culture.

I’m committed to building a Columbus where inclusion isn’t just a goal—it’s the foundation of everything we do. Together, we can create a city where everyone, regardless of who they are or who they love, has the opportunity to thrive.
