On July 14, 2025, Columbus City Council unanimously passed legislation to create a Commission on LGBTQ+ Affairs—formally recognizing what many of us have long known: LGBTQ+ residents deserve a seat at the table of government, not just during Pride, but every day decisions are being made that affect our lives.
This historic vote did not happen by accident. It happened because advocates pushed. Because community members shared their stories. Because we refused to be ignored.
As a champion for change in the system, I ran on a platform of structural equity and visibility for all Columbus residents—especially those pushed to the margins. I called for the very kind of institutional support now being created. Today, I celebrate this moment as a step forward for our city—and as a reminder that persistent advocacy works.
But let us be clear: a commission is not a cure. It’s a tool. And tools require direction, resources, and the political will to wield them effectively.
To the Council: thank you.
To our community: keep going.
To those wondering what comes next: stay engaged. Stay vocal. Stay rooted in purpose.
